This is not new and is not going anywhere anytime soon, unless someone introduces a total culling override mod. Whenever you look at say murkywater warehouse in Shadow Raid from outside - you can only see the walls, but your PC does see all the desks, boxes, guards, doors etc., the overall job becomes more complicated and PC can't do it at the rate you want it to. The FPS jumps you see in PD2 come from a fine use of first technology and bad use of the second one. Now, a bit more advanced techniques is known as occlusion culling, and its job is to check if some object is hidden behind other objects, so if the object is in the camera, but the player doesn't see that object - it won't render. if you turn away from the warehouse on the Shadow Raid or simply look up at the sky - you're likely to get a huge performance boost, because your PC doesn't have much work to do, so it can do it a lot of times per second. One of the most basic techniques is known as frustum culling, and its job is to stop PC from rendering everything the camera (player's viewpoint) doesn't look at, i.e. To reduce the workload PC has to process, and therefore increase the performance, game developers use various techniques. ![]()
